ELDs vs. AOBRDs

ELDs vs. AOBRDs

ELD vs. AOBRDFor carriers using AOBRDs (automatic onboard recording devices) before the rule compliance date December 18, 2017, the rule will replace AOBRDs with ELDs over a four-year implementation period.

An ELD synchronizes with a vehicle engine to automatically record driving time, for easier, more accurate hours of service (HOS) recording. An electronic logging device (ELD) is not the same as an automatic onboard recording device. The technical specifications are different.

(The following chart comes directly from the fmcsa.dot.gov site and gives you a great overview of the differences between AOBRDs and ELDs.)
Comparison of logbooks, AOBRDs and ELDs highlighting the benefits of ELDs:

Integral synchronization

(interface with the vehicle engine)

N/AN/ARequiredYes; automatically captures whether engine is on, whether the vehicle is in motion, miles driven, engine hours
Location InformationYesManual entry (or GPS, if available) required at each change of duty statusRequired at each change of duty status – manual or automaticAutomatic for each change of duty status; at 60-minute intervals while vehicle is moving; at engine-on and engine-off; and at beginning and end of personal use and yard moves
Graph Grid Display

(graphical display of duty status)

YesYesNot requiredPresents a graph grid of driver daily duty status changes on a display or a printout
RODS Printout at RoadsideN/ARequired, per inspector’s request.Optional choice of chart, electronic display, or printout.Choice of printout or display.
HOS Driver Advisory MessagesN/AN/AN/AWarning of unassigned time/miles upon login.
Default Duty StatusN/AN/AN/ADefault status is “on-duty not driving” when vehicle has not been in motion for 5 consecutive minutes & driver has not responded to ELD prompt within 1 minute.
Clock Time DriftN/AN/AN/AUTC (coordinated universal time) synchronization – deviation cannot exceed 10 minutes at any time
Resistance to TamperingN/AN/ATamperproof to the maximum extent practicalProhibits alteration or erasure of original data collected by ELD, or alteration of the source data streams used to provide that information
Identification of Sensor Failures and Edited DataN/AN/AIdentifies sensor failures and edited data reproduced in printed form.Monitors, records, and displays edits with annotations, as well as detectable ELD malfunctions and data inconsistencies.
